Vincent Kompany explains why Leroy Sané didn’t play for Bayern Munich vs. Auckland City

Vincent Kompany fielded a much stronger starting XI than was anticipated for Bayern Munich’s FIFA Club World Cup opener against Auckland City in Cincinnati, Ohio, so it was no surprise that the German Rekordmeister came away 10-0 victors. The reigning Bundesliga champions went into the halftime break up 6-0 on the heels of braces from Kingsley Coman and Michael Olise and a goal a piece from Sacha Boey and Thomas Müller.

Kompany bringing in the likes of Jamal Musiala, Dayot Upamecano, and Serge Gnabry in the second half along with youngsters Adam Aznou and Lennart Karl didn’t exactly make things any easier for Auckland City in the second half, either.

One player missing in all the aciton, though: Galatasaray-bound Leroy Sané.

Despite having completed a move to the Turkish giants, Leroy Sané will still remain with Bayern at the Club World Cup through July 1st. But the German international was an unused sub in the routing of Auckland City at the TQL Stadium. After the match, Kompany explained why.

“He [Sané] was the last to join us. He will definitely still play his role, an important role. Hopefully, he’ll give it his all for three more games, and hopefully, we’ll be able to play the last few games [of the tournament] without him after he’s gone,” Kompany stated to Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).

The winger had only just completed his signing with Galatasaray in Istanbul prior to meeting up with the rest of the Bayern squad in the United States and did not have time to get the proper amount of training minutes in his legs to be involved. Hopefully, however, he’ll be able to play a part in what will more than likely be far more difficult group stage tests in Boca Juniors and Benfica.
