Pune: The city and its surrounding areas are likely to witness showers until Sunday after which they may taper out, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday. The daily weather report said, “Partly cloudy sky becoming generally cloudy towards afternoon/evening. Light rain is very likely until Sunday.” Less rain days will follow from Tuesday with a forecast of “mainly clear sky becoming generally partly cloudy towards afternoon/evening.“Key weather stations in Pune, including Shivajinagar, Lohegaon, Pashan, NDA, and Magarpatta, did not record any rainfall on Thursday. “The IMD predicted scattered to fairly widespread light/moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat and Marathawada on May 29,” a senior IMD official said. The Met department downgraded the orange alert for the city to a yellow alert for Wednesday.In the 36 hours ending at 8.30pm on Tuesday, IMD’s Chinchwad weather station recorded the highest rainfall of 76mm, followed by Lohegaon’s 69.6 mm, Pashan’s 68.5mm, NDA’s 65mm, and Shivajinagar’s 57.8mm. Magarpatta recorded 32.5mm rainfall during this period, while Koregaon Park received 11.5mm.According to data from the irrigation department, the catchment areas of the dams that provide water to Pune have not recorded showers. The collective storage of four dams, including Khadakwasla, Temghar, Panshet, and Varasgaon, was 5.73 TMC, which was 19.6% compared to the total capacity.
