Chelsea have had a number of exceptional players in their squads over the years.
The Blues are one of the most successful sides in history, and they have won every trophy up for grabs in their history, including the UEFA Conference League last month.
Yes, that competition isn’t what makes them a great club, but their record of five Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues proves that they have been elite in the past.
That wouldn’t have been possible without world-class players. There have been many, yet Ruben Neves seems to have forgotten them all.
Ruben Neves says Fernando Torres is the best player in Chelsea history
Neves knows the Premier League very well having spent six years at Wolves.
The Portugal international faced Chelsea on plenty of occasions over the years. Neves was even linked with a move to Stamford Bridge a few seasons ago.
That move didn’t materialise, and he joined Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, where he has done a decent job since his switch in 2023.
Now, while filming a video with Goal, the 28-year-old was asked to name the best players in the history of a few clubs across Europe.
For Manchester City, he named Kevin De Bruyne, while Cristiano Ronaldo was his pick for Real Madrid. He also chose Andrea Pirlo for Juventus, Philipp Lahm for Bayern Munich and Lionel Messi for Barcelona, which are decent shouts.
But, when asked to name the best player in Chelsea’s history, Neves chose Fernando Torres.
Fernando Torres’ stats at Chelsea prove that Ruben Neves is wrong
When you think about Chelsea’s greatest ever players, the likes of Frank Lampard, John Terry, Didier Drogba, Petr Cech, and Eden Hazard come to mind.
Torres, who joined the Blues for £50 million from Liverpool in 2011 (BBC), didn’t live up to all the hype, and his stats prove it.
Games | Goals | Assists | |
Fernando Torres at Chelsea | 172 | 45 | 30 |
After struggling at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea sent Torres out on loan to AC Milan, and that move was eventually made permanent.
In his prime at Liverpool, Torres was one of the best strikers in the world, but he was shockingly bad at Chelsea.
Neves couldn’t be more wrong calling him the Blues’ best-ever player.
