Durham won the toss and elected to bat, and despite losing Symington early for 8, a partnership of 129 for the 2nd wicket proved why this was a good decision. Durham captain Borthwick made 80 from 91 deliveries before being Bill Prideaux’s second wicket which was caught by Ollie Morgan behind the stumps.
Other opener Wilf La Fontaine-Jackson made 53 before being caught by O’Riordan off the bowling of Tejpal Birdi. McAlindon and Mustard put on 44 before being dismissed in quick succession both by Bryce Street, while Bowman departed the following over for one, caught and bowled by Birdi. Similarly Bushell only contributed one before being bowled by Matt Quinn who is returning to full fitness.
Killeen and Callum Parkinson (Brother of Kent Spinner Matt) put on 107 for the 8th wicket before Kileen departed for 78. Hogg made 4 and Will Harby only needed four balls to take the final wicket as Callum Parkinson departed for 66. Durham finishing 373 all out.
Bryce Street opened the batting with Harry Fulton, son of former Kent Player Dave Fulton, and the pair made a good start, making 64 for the first wicket. Fulton was first to go as he was caught and bowled by Parkinson for 25. Parkinsons second over saw him dismiss Harby LBW for 0.
Bushnell continued the pressure at the other end getting O’Riordan to chip to midwicket for 5 before dismissing Corey Flintoff for a first ball duck. At 73/4 Kent were struggling and needed a partnership. Ollie Morgan joined Street and took Kent to 100 before departing, bowled by Mawdsley for 21. Street then crossed the half-century mark in an innings which the hosts needed to avoid further damage. Burgess made 21 before being caught by Hutchinson off the bowling of Killeen.
Birdi joined Street as the latter began to accelerate, reaching a sublime century in 175 balls. Birdi made 24 before departing before Mawdsley got the big wicket of Street, for 114. Ollie Butterfill and Matt Quinn made 81 for the 9th wicket before Quinn departed for 45. Butterfill made 50 in 96 balls providing crucial lower order runs for the hosts.
Chanda provided security as he made 3 from 56 balls before being dismissed allowing Butterfill to finish 58* and take Kent to 333 all out, behind by 40.
Scott Borthwick shone in the second innings with supporting knocks from mustard and Symington to put Durham into the driver’s seat. La Fontaine-Jackson made 22 and Symington 49 as the visitors found themselves 126/2 in only 27.5 overs.
McAlindon was caught by Fulton off the bowling of Butterfill for 9 before Mustard and Borthwick put on 140 as Both made half-centuries with Borthwick converting to a century in 143 balls.
Mustard departed for 65, before Birdi got the big wicket of Borthwick for 138, and the score 326/5. Durham then lost 3 wickets for 23 runs as they elected to declare on 368/8 meaning Kent needed 409 to win. Tejpal Birdi taking 4 wickets.
The Kent top order we’re all able to make starts, but none could convert those starts into big scores. Street made 31 and Fulton made 27 as the first wicket partnership was worth 50.
Harby made 49 before being caught by short cover, unfortunately falling just short of his half-century. Callum Parkinson then opened up Kent’s middle order as O’Riordan made 47, Flintoff made 11.
Allowing Hutchinson and Bushnell to get the wickets of Burgess, Birdi and Morgan for a combined 17 runs. Butterfill continued his fine form as he looked to save a draw for the hosts, as he made 34* but Matt Quinn could only make 22 and Chanda 25 as Callum Parkinson claimed the final wicket, bowling Kent out for 284, meaning Durham winners by 124 runs.
