Kamal Haasan On Resolving Creative Differences: Have To Be Respectful To Whole Script, Not One Star – EXCLUSIVE (Credit – Instagram)
“Co-writing doesn’t look like it might—look like two—you can hear two pens scratching simultaneously. It’s not done like that,” Kamal said. Sharing how a project shaped up, he explained, “I completed a script, I had it with me, I did that script with a lot of passion and I thought this will be good. Then it was given, and since he (Mani Ratnam) read it and liked it and said, ‘Can I work on it?’ which means he’s going to redial it. So that’s what he did.”
Kamal Hassan on navigating creative differences
When asked about dealing with creative differences in the writing process, Kamal was candid. “No, the difference is, when we agreed on the subject, we know what’s the core. You can look at it from various points of view. He chose one point of view which he thought was logical for his mind, and I could see that—where he’s coming from.” He added, “So there’s very little disagreement except like minor corrections, which are uncomfortable for me or him.”
Kamal’s final word on navigating the process? “You’ll have to be respectful to the whole script, not one star in the film.”
