Spain’s Fabian Ruiz heaped rich praise on fellow midfielder Pedri after the win over France secured the reigning Euro 2024 champions a spot in the UEFA Nations League final. The fixture also saw Barcelona striker Lamine Yamal shine for the Spanish side but Ruiz reserved his compliments for the club’s other La Liga star, Pedri.
Speaking to the media after the win, Ruiz noted Pedri’s contribution to Spain’s triumph, highlighting the midfielder’s strong performance over France in his country’s major Nations League knockout victory. Ruiz marked Pedri as a key component in Spain’s plans as they now head to the summit clash on Sunday, June 8, versus Portugal.
“It’s not just Pedri, it’s everyone because this team is built on the family we are. We know the tremendous quality we have in the locker room,” Ruiz said, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo after Pedri’s twin goals helped Spain beat France 5-4. “We all know what a great player Pedri is; he’s incredibly important to us, and he put on a show the other day.”
Ruiz himself has been an influential figure in Spain’s run under Luis de la Fuente. The former Napoli star is enjoying a brilliant year on the field. Having secured the Champions League title with Paris Saint-Germain, he now stands on the verge of winning the UEFA Nations League crown.
With great performances, Ruiz has become one of coach de la Fuente’s favourites for the Spanish side. The Spain team manager put the 29-year-old alongside Pedri and Yamal as his candidates for the Ballon d’Or title. When confronted with the same question, Ruiz came up with a diplomatic response.
“As long as all that’s being talked about, it’s a good sign. We’re putting up great numbers, winning titles. The Ballon d’Or is a separate title given to the best player of the year, and right now I’m not even thinking about that,” Ruiz said.
“I’m just thinking about enjoying myself and helping the national team now, and my team when necessary. It’s a good sign if it’s being talked about, but right now I’m only thinking about Sunday. I hope whoever wins the Ballon d’Or is a teammate.”
