Lucknow: Amidst a public confrontation, a 17-year-old girl in Kushinagar compelled her boyfriend to apply sindoor to her at a local temple, asserting a three-year relationship and two abortions. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening at the Manjhariya Devi temple within Hata Kotwali limits, before nearly 200 spectators. The girl, a Class 12 student, summoned her 20-year-old businessman boyfriend to the temple and accused him of betrayal. “Who will marry me now? He was in a relationship with me for three years and made me undergo two abortions. I am fighting for my rights — how am I wrong?” she stated before forcing her boyfriend to apply sindoor to her forehead. Police reported that her boyfriend operates a jewellery shop near the girl’s college gate in Sukrauli Nagar Panchayat and lives approximately 500 metres from the rented house where she resides with her mother. Her father is employed in Gujarat.Over time, the girl frequently visited the shop, and their acquaintance developed into a romantic relationship, authorities said. They were regularly meeting at Manjhariya Devi temple over the past three years, according to local residents. On Tuesday afternoon, both families reached the police station, where Hata SHO Ram Sahai Chauhan advised the girl that, as a minor, she cannot marry but can lodge an FIR against her boyfriend and for abortions.“The girl was adamant on marrying the boy,” said the SHO. Members of the Childline were also summoned to explain to the girl that she cannot marry. So far, no complaint has been filed, though police are verifying facts and statements. “We are waiting for the girl or the family to file a complaint,” a senior officer stated.
