Diana Shnaider’s bid to crack the top ten could be boosted by a deep run in Berlin.
The Russian faces a tricky first round against former finalists Donna Vekic, who is an experienced and high-quality grass court player.
This will be their third meeting with Vekic winning in three in Australia earlier this year.
Perhaps more significantly, Shnaider beat Vekic 6-3 2-6 6-4 in the final in Bad Homburg last year to secure the title on grass.
This may well be another three-setter but we think Shnaider’s extra fire-power will be key.
