Ahmedabad: At least 27 people have lost their lives in the past three days due to torrential rains in India’s western Gujarat state. The heavy downpour has caused widespread flooding, with Palitana and Jesar towns being the worst-hit areas. These towns recorded an astonishing 34 inches of rain in just 24 hours.

Disaster response teams have been deployed to rescue those trapped in flooded areas. So far, dozens have been rescued, including 18 farm labourers who were stuck in mango orchards in the Gadhada area and 22 people in the Surendranagar district whose homes were inundated with water from an overflowing river.

The state government has intensified inter-departmental coordination to ensure swift relief and rescue operations.

The state relief commissioner, Alok Kumar Pandey, has assured that the state is fully equipped to handle the situation. With more heavy monsoon rainfall expected, residents are bracing themselves for further challenges.

India’s annual monsoon season, which lasts from June to September, is crucial for replenishing water supplies but often leads to flash floods and landslides that claim many lives.
