Chennai Weather Update: IMD issues rainfall alert, thunderstorms likely this week

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rainfall alert for Chennai on Monday, indicating the likelihood of thunderstorms over the coming days. According to the department’s seven-day forecast, the city is set to receive light to moderate rainfall accompanied by a gradual decline in temperature, offering relief from the ongoing heat and humidity.

Rain and thunderstorm alert

On Monday, June 9, Chennai is expected to have partly cloudy skies with chances of moderate rain or thunderstorms. Daytime temperatures may reach up to 38°C, while the minimum is likely to stay around 29°C.

Cloudy skies and light rain ahead

Starting Tuesday, June 11, Chennai will likely experience generally cloudy skies with light rain expected daily through June 13. A gradual cooling trend is forecast, with maximum temperatures dipping from 37°C on Tuesday to around 35°C by Friday, and nighttime lows ranging between 27°C and 28°C.
Although humidity levels will remain elevated, the showers are expected to ease daytime temperatures, providing slight relief for residents and commuters.

Consistent rainfall by the weekend

Heading into the weekend (June 14 and 15), the IMD predicts more steady and widespread rainfall. With rain expected on both days, daytime temperatures are forecast to remain around 35–36°C. The continued showers may indicate the early onset of the monsoon season.

Meanwhile, heavy rain has also been predicted for various other parts of Tamil Nadu in the coming days.
