Brazilian teams have kicked off the FIFA Club World Cup with strong performances, and Botafogo’s left-back Alex Telles took the opportunity to address the surprise some express at their success.
“Honestly, I don’t understand why people are surprised that Brazilian players are doing well in the World Cup. In Brazil, it’s normal to value foreign players more than our own. It seems like here we don’t have talent or football skills. What we are showing is that Brazilians have quality. No team is finding it easy against Brazilian sides, and this should be seen as normal,” Telles said on the Rose Bowl pitch, ahead of Botafogo’s match against Paris Saint-Germain scheduled for 10 p.m. Brasília time on Tuesday.
His strong opinion was supported by the coaches involved. When asked if he was surprised by the Brazilian teams’ performances and results so far, Luis Enrique simply replied, “No, I’m not surprised.”
