Ludhiana: The monsoon is set to arrive earlier than usual in Ludhiana, with weather experts predicting its onset around June 24 or 25, accompanied by moderate to heavy rainfall and a notable dip in temperatures.Surinder Pal, director of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Chandigarh, confirmed that monsoon conditions are developing rapidly across Punjab, with Ludhiana likely to see rainfall intensify over the next two to three days. Daytime temperatures are expected to fall to 31°C by Thursday, while nights may cool to around 26°C.“Conditions are favourable for the monsoon’s arrival,” said Kulwinder Kaur Gill, principal agrometeorologist at Punjab Agricultural University’s School of Climate Change and Agricultural Meteorology. She cited increasing southwesterly winds (30-40 kmph), a rise in relative humidity to 40-50% in the evenings, and a drop in daytime temperatures as key indicators.Although the typical monsoon onset date for Ludhiana is July 1, this year’s early arrival could bring a total of up to 600 mm of rainfall between July and late Sept, Gill added. According to IMD protocol, the official declaration of monsoon onset in the state requires at least 2.5 mm of rain over two consecutive days at five designated stations, including Ludhiana. In the meantime, pre-monsoon showers are expected in the coming days, with the IMD website forecasting a partly cloudy sky and intermittent spells of rain or thundershowers for the next four days. A yellow alert has been issued for Ludhiana on two of those days, signalling the need for authorities to remain on standby for potential weather disruptions. Saturday’s day temperature was recorded at 34.6°C, nearly 2°C below normal, while the night temperature stood at 27.6°C — slightly above the seasonal average. While many residents welcome the seasonal shift, some are urging caution. Jaspreet Kaur, a student, said she looked forward to getting drenched in the rain but acknowledged the rise in humidity. Others, like local resident Kuldeep Singh, highlighted health risks such as waterlogging, mosquito-borne diseases, and reduced immunity. “I avoid street food during the rainy season,” he said, “just to stay safe.”As Ludhiana braces for the monsoon’s arrival, authorities are advising residents to stay updated with alerts and take preventive health measures.MSID:: 121995063 413 |
