Two players from the Algarve lifted the Champions League trophy last weekend
João Neves and Gonçalo Ramos, two footballers born and raised in the Algarve, helped Paris Saint-Germain seal a historic 5–0 win over Inter Milan to claim their first-ever UEFA Champions League title on Saturday night (May 31).
The emphatic victory, played out at Munich’s Allianz Arena, capped off a dream season for the two southern Portuguese stars and for PSG, who finally lifted the European trophy after years of chasing it.
João Neves, the 20-year-old midfield sensation from Tavira, started the final and played a key role in the dominant performance, while his teammate, Gonçalo Ramos, 23, from Olhão, came off the bench in the 84th minute to join in the celebration on the pitch. Two other Portuguese players also celebrated the title for PSG: midfielder Vitinha and left-back Nuno Mendes.
The duo’s triumph adds a golden chapter to Algarve football history, with both players also collecting Ligue 1 and French Cup medals this season under manager Luis Enrique.
