Daily Schmankerl: Bayern Munich, Real Madrid finalists for PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma?; Bayern views Nick Woltemade as future pursuit; The next stop for Florian Neuhaus?; Bayern used as a pawn by Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo?; and MORE!

Are Bayern Munich and Real Madrid really chasing Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma? According to Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Carlo Laudisa, the two power clubs are of interest to Donnarumma as well:

Bayern and Real Madrid are two clubs that Gianluigi Donnarumma would be open to move to. After winning the Champions League with PSG, the 26-year old goalkeeper is considering a new challenge in a different league. PSG contract expires next year. Premier League clubs are also in the running for Donnarumma, who really thrust himself onto the scene during the EURO 2020 (really 2021) competition. For Bayern Munich, Manuel Neuer is expected to retire after the 2025/26 campaign, but the club did also recently invest in Jonas Urbig (who has looked great) and Daniel Peretz (who is expected to be loaned or sold this summer). In addition, Sven Ulreich is reportedly on the verge of inking a deal to make him the squad’s No.3 goalkeeper, while Alexander Nübel is still in the picture, despite being on loan at VfB Stuttgart.

In a nutshell, if there was a time that Bayern Munich might be reluctant to invest in a top-tier goalkeeper, it might be now, especially given how the team reportedly feels about Urbig’s future.

Bayern Munich likes VfB Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade, but would be reluctant to buy him because of the presence of Harry Kane:

Nick Woltemade is a question for the future as far as Bayern are concerned. They have already made contact with the player to signal the fact they are interested and following his development. But, at the moment, he’s a young player, and it wouldn’t make sense to sign him given Bayern still have Harry Kane leading the line.

VfB Stuttgart are trying to give Woltemade a new contract so that he can be on a higher salary. We’re already aware of interest from Atletico Madrid. But for the time being, he’s not the number one target for Bayern Munich.

In terms of Premier League interest, there are currently clubs in the middle of the Premier League table who are keen. We’re not yet talking about interest from the likes of Arsenal nor Liverpool who are searching for a new striker.

The German national team — and its Bayern Munich contingent — will have its hands full in trying to deal with a France side, who probably feels as if it needs to show a little something extra after falling to Spain, 5-4.

This is a high-powered match-up, which might be a little too hot to handle for Germany at the moment. Let’s get into it — this is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Preview Show:

  • A look at where each team stands after losing earlier this week.
  • A rundown of France’s game vs. Spain and why Germany could be in for some trouble.
  • A guess at the starting XI for Germany.
  • A prediction on the match.

Man…what might Florian Neuhaus have been if he did not blow out his ACL. Now, the Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder could be headed to Fortuna Düsseldorf:

Fortuna Düsseldorf are dreaming of a transfer for Florian #Neuhaus! #F95

First contact has been made. Düsseldorf bosses are considering a loan, but it’s currently very unlikely. He has more enquiries, with Augsburg also interested.

The 28-y/o central midfielder has a top contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach until 2027.

It is always amazing how some players come back from that injury like nothing ever happened physically (Florian Wirtz, Leroy Sané), while others are never the same (Neuhaus, Federico Chiesa).

It has been reported that Kingsley Coman is reluctant to leave Bayern Munich, but that might not necessarily be the case any longer:

Both sides are of the opinion that they will split this summer. The rumours around Barcelona are not true – they can’t afford him. By contrast, Saudi Arabia are, at the moment, more concrete for the player. Al-Hilal are interested. There’s also some small interest from Newcastle, but this isn’t Coman’s first option. So, he would rather go to Saudi Arabia and take the big paycheck. Bayern are now waiting for an official offer.

This report is gaining more steam now, too. Maybe an exit is coming for Coman.

Bayern Munich is prepping for the Club World Cup, while also exploring what moves it can make to bolster its roster. The German national team is licking its wounds and looking to regroup in time for Sunday’s third-place match.

This is what we have on tap for this episode of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show:

  • Germany’s loss to Portugal showed that the squad is not yet ready for prime time…but does that mean it cannot get there in time for the 2026 World Cup? Nope, so let us tell you why.
  • Jonathan Tah’s performance vs. Portugal did not exactly change anyone’s mind, who thinks he is…just a guy.
  • Joshua Kimmich led by example with his heart, fight, and hustle, but did he fail at helping prevent the team from unraveling?
  • Can Julian Nagelsmann stop himself from over-tinkering?
  • Bayern Munich will soon begin its preparation for the Club World Cup. What storylines should we be watching for?
  • Have we reached the point where the professional football schedule for club and international play has just become too much?

Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, Aleksandar Pavlović, and Dayot Upamecano were all listed in Transfermarkt’s most valuable list for the Bundesliga:

The transfer game is always tricky, but Bayern Munich is being very wary of the rumored interest in Bavaria coming from Liverpool FC attacker Cody Gakpo:

We’ve heard that Cody Gakpo could imagine signing a new contract at Liverpool. So, Bayern Munich aren’t quite sure yet whether they’re just being used as a pawn in the poker. In the past, when Uli Hoeneß was involved in transfers, Bayern have always had a Plan A when it came to transfers, but never a Plan B. Now, Max Eberl is working differently, and there are many players on the list. Gakpo is one of them but you can’t say that he’s at the top of the list.

Bayern realise that it’s not an easy feat to bring a player from Liverpool to Munich. This is why they’re checking out the alternatives available to them on the market.

Germany hosted Portugal at the Allianz Arena in the UEFA Nations League semifinals and was outdone by a quality Portuguese side that used a second half surge to snatch a 2-1 victory away from a stunned German team.

A goal from Florian Wirtz kicked off the action, but Portugal ultimately seized the moment. Let’s talk about all of that and more on the Bavarian Podcast Work — Postgame Show. This is what we have on tap:

  • A look at the starting XI and the decisions that Julian Nagelsmann made.
  • A rundown of the scoring and substitutions. Did Nagelsmann rip the momentum from his squad?
  • Some final thoughts and takeaways on the match, including the remarkable progress that the German national team has made under Julian Nagelsmann.

Liverpool FC is expected to close the deal for Florian Wirtz, but if something unexpectedly happened, LFC would seek to talk to RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons:

Liverpool are considering a move to sign RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Xavi Simons. The 22-year-old is a cheaper alternative to Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, with a valuation close to £60m.

Eric Dier recently gave credit to the physicality of The Bundesliga.

“The biggest difference to the Premier League is that the Bundesliga is very physical. Statistics such as running performance and sprint values show how athletic the league is. However, the game in Germany is a bit more controlled than in England. In the Premier League, there are a lot of quick switching moments – sometimes it feels like a tennis match because the ball is constantly going back and forth. That makes the league spectacular, but also less structured. In the Bundesliga, the teams rely more on controlled possession. The game is more organised, with clearer tactical structures,” said Dier. “(The Bundesliga is) spectacular. The atmosphere in the stadiums really impressed me. It’s great fun to be part of it.”

  • Julian Nagelsmann almost made the move back to Bayern Munich. How close did he get? Pretty darn close it seems.
  • Does Bayern Munich really need to go big at left wing? Rafael Leão, Cody Gakpo, Eberechi Eze, and Kaoru Mitoma are all reportedly on the table, but can Bayern Munich really get any of them?
  • Fit is everything — Timo Werner and Jadon Sancho are rich, but should be cautionary tales on how to manage a career path for young footballers.
