The first week of Wimbledon wraps up on Saturday with a pair of Americans in action, as Ben Shelton takes on Marton Fucsovics and Brandon Nakashima faces Lorenzo Sonego. It’s the finale of the third round.
(10) Ben Shelton vs. (LL) Marton Fucsovics
Ben Shelton has carved out a space for himself in the top 10. He is the second-highest ranked American after Taylor Fritz thanks in part to his success at majors. So far in 2025 Shelton posted career-best results at the Australian Open (semifinals) and the French Open (fourth round). He made it through his first two rounds in routine fashion with straight-set wins over Alex Bolt and Rinky Hijikata.
His third-round opponent is world No. 105 Marton Fucsovics. Despite his ranking, the Hungarian has played well on grass this season. He came up through qualifying in Stuttgart to make the quarterfinals. He has played a lot of tennis already these last two weeks. Fucsovics came up through qualies (almost), and while he lost at the final hurdle to Chris Rodesch, he grabbed a spot as a lucky loser. It’s likely that his Cinderella run will come to an abrupt halt on Saturday. Shelton plays well on the big stages and the American wields one of the most dangerous first serves on tour right now.

(29) Brandon Nakashima vs. Lorenzo Sonego
This third-round match has the potential to be another Wimbledon battle. Lorenzo Sonego beat Brandon Nakashima in the first tournament of the year in Hong Kong back in January. The world No. 47 has generally had a disappointing season; he came into Wimbledon with a losing 11-16 record. The draw gods were kind to the Italian at the All-England Club and he defeated Jaime Faria in the first round before beating Nikiloz Basilashvili in the second.

Nakashima has begun to turn around what was a dismal start to his 2025 season. The American has played well on grass this summer, with two quarterfinal results in the warmup events. He has dropped sets in both of his first-week matches so far–to Bu Yunchaokete and Reilly Opelka–but he is generally in good form at the All-England Club. This is an excellent opportunity for Nakashima to make his way to the round of 16 for the first time since 2022.
